Improving Your Credit Report / Score
Unfortunately, most consumers still do not know basics about credit reports and how much they really mean in our lives. There is a huge group of consumers who will actually harm their credit report and score before they ever learn anything about it.
- Pay your bills on time. Late payments can have a huge negative impact on your credit report and the longer you pay your bills on time, the better your credit report and score.
- Keep balances low on credit cards. High levels of debt can affect your score. Maxed out credit cards can lower your score.
- Never open new credit cards that you don't need. New accounts will lower your average account age.
- Use credit cards but manage them responsibly. In general, having credit cards and installment loans (and making timely payments) will raise your score.
- Closing an account doesn't make it go away. Closed accounts still show up on your credit report and may be used your score.
